MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROJECT: IMHOTEP

Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Scholarships

Application Deadline: January 31, 2010

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are providing four scholarships to qualified Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) undergraduate (juniors and seniors) and recent graduates (class of 2009) for the Project: IMHOTEP internship program for summer of 2010. The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Alliance is working with APIAHF, and CDC to promote Project: IMHOTEP as part of their efforts to increase the number of NHPI public health and health care professionals. NHPI applicants who are not selected as scholarship are still eligible for the general selection process by Morehouse College. Background: Project: IMHOTEP is designed for underrepresented minority students who are interested in pursuing careers in public health, with particular focus in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Occupational Safety and Health. Interns gain valuable experience in conducting public health research with health professionals at the CDC. The program is open to students with a major/minor in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, and any health related science.

Requirements: Applicant must be a Junior, Senior or Recent Graduate student with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or better.

Dates of Program: May 24th through August 12, 2010

Location: Atlanta, GA; Cincinnati, OH; Hyattsville, MD; Morgantown, WV; Pittsburgh, PA; Spokane,WA; Tanzania, East Africa; and Washington, DC.

A Financial Stipend, Travel Allowance and Housing Will Be Provided.

Jack Tobin Papers

--> Pacific Collection librarian Eleanor Kleiber recently finished processing the Jack Tobin Papers , and they are now available for public use. Jack Adair Tobin, Ph.D. (June 15, 1920-June 18, 2010) was an anthropologist who worked in the Marshall Islands, beginning in 1950. This manuscript collection, which comprises roughly six linear feet of material and covers the bulk of Dr. Tobin's professional life, is extremely important in that it contains primary source documentation of numerous aspects of Marshallese life during a period of intense change. In addition to the physical materials in the collection, nearly 2,000 photographs have also been digitized and are available online . A finding aid for the collection is also available online .
